Opening Reception: "Finding My Folk" Art Exhibit at the Old Stone House: "Curated by Jamaican-born independent curator Krista Scenna, “Finding My Folk” engages seven contemporary immigrant artists whose practices embrace the folkloric and its propensity to adapt to its given place and time. As immigrants who hail from all over the globe and have long called New York home, these gifted creators are actively shaping their own traditions, rituals, and customs by blending elements of their past, memories of “home,” and visions of the future. Their folklore reflects a quest to understand and communicate a new narrative informed by notions of the familiar with notions of what could be." (Old Stone House)

Nitehawk Shorts Festival 2023, Matinee Two: “Even when you’re in a seemingly familiar situation life is frequently unpredictable. Different situations affect people in unique ways and can dramatically alter your perception of what you took for granted as a permanent consistency. The way we react and find a way forward becomes more urgent in these times. While all of this certainly applies to real life, some of the filmmakers in this program have taken the same notions and will challenge the way you might think of subject matter and genres in film.” (Nitehawk)
Women in Animation: Persepolis. "Based on Satrapi’s graphic novel about her life in pre and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The film traces Satrapi’s growth from child to rebellious, punk-loving teenager in Iran. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, and the background of the disastrous Iran/Iraq war." (Nitehawk)
1983's Scarface. “Written by Oliver Stone, Brian De Palma is at his stylish gangster thriller best in the classic drug cartel film about the high and low times of Tony Montana, Scarface. In the 1980s Montana entered the United States with a flood of Cuban immigrants sent by Fidel Castro to be reunited with relatives.” (Nitehawk)

Closing Question: Who’s Drawing these?
Up and down 6th Avenue, somone has drawn some whimsical profiles. A person with Bart Simpson hair on a traffic box, a woman with bangs on a police box, a man with a fez on one block and a smiling rabbit (we think?) on another.
We like them! We noticed them stretching from at least Union to 12th Street. If you have any info you want to share (publicly in a comment or privately by replying to today’s email) let us know.
