Black Girl + I Am Somebody: “The Pan-African Marxist and towering pioneer of African Cinema, made his feature debut in 1966 with the brilliant and stirring Black Girl (La noire de…). The Senegalese Sembène, who was also a writer and former militant trade unionist, transforms a deceptively simple plot—about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white couple, and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a figurative and literal prison—into a complex, layered critique on the ongoing racialized economic hierarchy and dynamics of the supposedly postcolonial world.”(5:00 PM, BAM, $17)
Soleil Ô + Fannie’s Film: “Made by the most militant of the giants of African Cinema, the film follows a starry-eyed immigrant as he leaves West Africa and journeys to Paris in search of a job, a community, and intellectual engagement—but soon discovers a hostile society where his very presence engenders fear and resentment. Soleil Ô was self-financed and shot over three years in the aftermath of May '68, and searching for a new form, the director turned away from conventional narrative.”(7:00 PM, BAM, $17)
Saturday
‘Blue Collar:’ “Already celebrated as the screenwriter of Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, Paul Schrader established himself as a major director with his 1978 debut feature film: a powerful, critically acclaimed drama starring Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel, and Yaphet Kotto as auto assembly-line workers who hatch a plan to rob a safe at union headquarters.” (2PM, BAM, $17)
Black Girl + I Am Somebody: (7:00 PM, BAM, $17)
‘No Fear, No Die:’ “The mesmerizing Isaach de Bankolé and Alex Descas star in the under-seen second feature by celebrated director Claire Denis, an unflinching portrait of two Black immigrant men from Benin and French Antilles, scraping out a living through illegal cockfights in a restaurant basement on the outskirts of Paris. As their restaurateur partner, portrayed by French New Wave legend Jean-Claude Brialy, demands more violence and blood, bonds fray and tensions escalate out of control—all set to a slow-burning score by South African jazz great Abdullah Ibrahim. Inspired by the writings of postcolonial philosopher Frantz Fanon, No Fear, No Die viscerally evokes the psychic trauma and economic disenfranchisement inherited from the history of French colonization. Restored in 4K by The Film Desk/Pathé in 2022. ”(9:00 PM, BAM, $17)
Sunday
