Election Year News & Registration
🗳If You Want to Switch Parties for an NYC Primary, Re-register by Valentine's Day: “The Valentine’s Day deadline is consequential for citywide contests like the mayoral race. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 6-to-1 in New York City, and the winner of the June 24 Democratic mayoral primary has a high likelihood of prevailing in the general election.” (Gothamist)
🏘Amid Reelection Battle, Shahana Hanif Lands a Heated Rezoning Deal: “The negotiated proposal approved by two City Council committees on Wednesday would include two 10-story buildings with 250 units, 40% of which will be affordable. That was quite different from the original proposal of two taller towers of at least 13 stories, with a lower affordability guarantee of 25%.” (City & State)
🏘The Housing Crisis Forces Change on a Low-Rise Pocket of Brooklyn: “Progressives right now, we don’t want displacement, we don’t want people to leave our city,’ Ms. Hanif, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, said in an interview. ‘For me, being a progressive means tackling those issues and tackling those issues means getting to a solution, and one of the solutions is to get more housing built.’” (NYT)
OPENING PROFILE: Anatolico, A Couple’s Dream Come True on 5th Ave
Please welcome Dan Myers as a new writer on The Walk, where he’ll deliver exclusives on the Opening & Closings beat. Dan has run Here's Park Slope since 2009, when he launched it as a neighborhood blog. He lives in Park Slope with his wife Janie and French Bulldog, Nugget.
Anatolico, which will be opening within a couple weeks on 5th Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets, is a true love story between married owners Derya Aguday (left) and Fotis Merakos. The shop will specialize in handcrafted Turkish goods including towels, robes, kaftans, bedding, and jewelry, and its opening is the culmination of a yearslong dream for the couple, who live in the neighborhood.
“I design 90% of the products myself,” says Aguday, who trained as an architect in Turkey. “They’re loomed, tailored, and crafted in my hometown of Ödemiş.”
Their journey began eight years ago with flea markets and holiday fairs, including weekend markets on 5th and 7th Avenues, but they always dreamed of a more permanent space. “It was a dream, but having a baby in 2019 and then COVID changed everything,” Aguday shares.
Then last month, after a successful Holiday pop-up on 7th Ave., she noticed a “For Rent” sign going up at 345 5th Avenue. “The landlord was Greek, and we instantly connected,” she recalls.
Though Aguday runs day-to-day operations, Merakos’ support is indispensable. “If Fotis didn’t support me, this business wouldn’t have happened,” she says. “Without him, it would have just stayed a dream.”
A soft opening is planned “as soon as possible” and a grand opening party is hopefully just a few weeks away. So stop by, say hi, and welcome Anatolico! -DM
